Got Nothing

Tonight as I stroll up and down our "neighborhood", I am exhausted. Another long day at work. I love the over time, but I am not getting things done at home tht I want to. By the time I arrive at home I have nothing left. I manage to eat and clean up, and relax for about an hour or so, before sleeping so I can start the entire process over.

I have always had a belief that " I work so I can live, I do not live to work". I have always tried to live by that, obviously balancing work and pleasure. When at work I enjoy working hard and having the sense of accomplishment, but I also enjoy my time, to do the things I enjoy. I do enjoy playing hard too. I think that personal time and hobbies are restorative to the soul.

To me the statment "all work and no play" is true indeed. There have even been studies done, about the affects constant work has on a persons body and mentality. This Friday a few of us at work are planning on meeting after work for a few drinks and conversation, I am looking forward to unwinding and being among good company.

I don't live to work. I live to avoid work. And I'm failing miserably at it.

What I always hated about overtime is that we would work so much of it until we couldn't stand it anymore. Then after we didn't get any for a while everybody was needed the extra income.

Sounds like a good plan...one that I try to follow myself! I still haven't won the lottery, so until then that damn alarm goes off at 6:30!

Jay - Its hard getting used to having overtime, but it hurts the checking account when you loose it...

I was worried when I read about the downsizing thing.

They are working you to death...

Fight for your right to have free time.

Death to overtime!

I've had that feeling of having nothing left. I can't even have fun when I'm that drained. Even sitting with a book feels like too much.

Get some rest when you can. Enjoy your time out Friday. And do as much as you can to nurture yourself - body and soul.

Good for you for having your priorities in the right place. Hopefully this overtime gig will be over with soon.

Dirk Star is right - death to overtime!

I remember a three month phase when we had over-time available both before and after normal work hours plus the weekend. You can imagine the hours some of us put in. After a couple of weeks I made the decision to work my backside off for a week - 2 hours of overtime in the morning, 3 in the evening and 8 per day (the maximum allowed) Saturday and Sunday and then just work my normal shift the following week.

None of the people trying to do the whole three months were successful. And some of them were noticably miserable because they were no longer living.

As the saying goes, On your deathbed, you won't lie there thinking, 'If only I had spent more time in the office...'

Maybe cut down on the overtime and enjoy some undertime... (Whatever undertime might mean!)

I am lucky enough to be semi-retired, but there still aren't enough hours in the day. Most of my work-life was spent in self-employment, where you never think in terms of hours.

There's a big difference between being a "boss" and being an "employee" - and of course there are pros and cons of each. Last evening my husband and I took a 10-year employee out to dinner. We also had given her a fairly large check on the actual 10th anniversary. We like her; she likes us; but let's be realistic. As long as the employee-employer relationship exists, we can never truly be friends, which is unfortunate. I'm not sure why I'm telling you this... Your boss may be a turkey, or he/she may be a good soul. In either case, I'm betting the boss will not be enjoying your Friday unwinding and good company.

Have a restorative TGIF get-together (and then come on over to my pot-luck)!

Have a good, restful and self-indulgent weekend. You deserve it.
